What is The Shopping Bus Service?

The Shopping Bus is a door to door service which offers shopping trips to two local supermarkets on set days and routes and is especially for those people, including wheelchair users, who are unable to use the normal bus service to carry out their shopping.

Each minibus is driven by one of our own volunteer drivers picking up our clients from their own homes, (or their preferred collection point), taking them to the local supermarket on their chosen day. Once all the clients have finished their shopping the shopping bus will then return all our passengers back to their home or their preferred drop off point.

How much does it cost?

It costs just £3.50 per person, per shopping trip plus an annual membership fee of £20 per year. All registered members are also entitled to join us on our weekly bus trips for our special Days Out. 

How do I  join?

Just make a quick telephone call to the office on 01903 723584 and we'll arrange for our assessor to visit you in order to conduct a simple assessment. We need to do this to ensure that we satisfy all health and safety requirements are met on both behalf of you, the client, and ourselves. We'll also discuss which days and shopping buses are available to you along with our obligations and further details of the service. 

Fully  Assisted

All shopping buses have volunteer shopping bus assistants to help with boarding or leaving the vehicle and to aid any shopper that needs help around the store or requires help in carrying their shopping from the bus to their premises. 

Additional Help

As an additional service, our shopping bus  assistants will also collect a shopping list from anyone who is unable to go shopping on the nominated day through illness or other unforeseen circumstances and deliver their shopping to them on the return journey.

Your Questions Answered

Yes, anyone wishing to benefit from the service must first register with ACCT and pay an annual subscription of £20 per year.

After the assessment, our Assessor will try to meet the clients preferred day and Shopping bus and will also advise the possible date of commencement. In the event the Assessor is unable to place the client on the chosen bus because the bus has reached its maximum passenger limit for instance, the Assessor will advise an alternative bus or day. The Shopping Bus will then call every week (or fortnightly) on the nominated day to take the client shopping.

The bus will collect all the clients who are also shopping on that particular morning or afternoon from their home and take them to the supermarket. This can take around an hour dependent on the number travelling and the road conditions. Once at the supermarket, all passengers get approx. an hour an a half to do their shopping before the reverse journey starts and being returned home.

Yes, our all Shopping Buses are wheelchair accessible. They all have tail lifts to access the bus and the driver will secure both you and your wheelchair in the bus whether it's a manual or electric wheelchair.

We go to Sainsburys in Rustington every morning Monday to Thursday and Morrisons in Littlehampton every Monday and Wednesday afternoon.
